Why Ambode and Bello are Fighting

Ambode.....wants Bello sacked

By Bayo Bernard

The lanky politician and one time journalist was penciled down to succeed former Governor Babatunde Fashola but fate made a u-turn on Tunji Bello, a serial member of Lagos state Executive Council and former commissioner of The Environment in Lagos state. Bello known to be very close to All Progressives Congress stalwart and ex helmsman of the state, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, lost the juicy position to incumbent Governor Akinwumi Ambode, who later appointed him Secretary to the State Government.

Barely two years after the relationship with his boss remained stormy. Governor Ambode who recently hinted his readiness to sack some members of the state executive council, has lately included Bello in the shopping list of those to leave his cabinet.

The governor had late last year sacked the state head of service, Mrs Ademola as a result of her predicament with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Another victim of the clean up exercise is former commissioner of finance……The magazine leant that soon axe will fall on some commissioners in the governor’s quest to rejig his cabinet for better performance.

Bello on his part had recently been told by Governor Ambode to resign as SSG but refused, hinting the governor that he did not owe his appointment to him. Governor Ambode, it was leant had quickly backed out on his plan to sack the SSG on the awareness that Tinubu may not be disposed to it.

‘Tinubu plainly told the governor that he did not support the sack of Bello” another source told the magazine.  The duo has been playing cat and mouse, though both are trying to hide their dispute from members of the public.

The governor has been unhappy that Bello was foisted on him by a larger political interest in the state. Sources informed the magazine last week that the state helmsman is skeptical of the longest serving member of the state executive council. Bello has served under successive governors since 1999.
