Buhari: Set to overhaul cabinet

There are strong indications that following the suspension of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachair Lawal for alleged corruption in the award of contract under the Presidential Initiative on Northeast, PINE, President Muhammadu Buhari is now poised to overhaul his cabinet to weed out Ministers connected with corruption allegations as well as those he perceived as under performing.


Prelude to this, Ministers have been instructed to tender their report cards by the way of briefing the president on the activities of their ministries since appointment

Sources in the presidency told The source that Babachair’s suspension sent jitters down the spines of President Buhari’s close and trusted aides, including some Ministers who have his ears and regarded as untouchables. They reportedly expressed shock that Babachair was suspended even as a staunch ally of the president and one of the key members of his kitchen cabinet. “It has now dawned on elements in the Presidency, including some cabinet Ministers who carry on as untouchables that Babachair’s fate could also befall them. Many of them are shocked and apprehensive now”, a source in the presidency told this Magazine.

It has been learnt that while some of the Ministers will be redeployed to Ministries where the President feels they will perform better, others, especially those who have since assuming office embroiled in controversies and allegations bordering on issues of corruption, will be out rightly eased out of the administration. “The President wants to give his government a new look, a new face. That is why he will soon overhaul his cabinet to weed out aides giving his government a bad name”, a top  presidential aide told this Magazine.
