“The Governor is my Friend”

Acho Nwakanma Abia State Deputy Governor
Acho Nwakanma Abia State Deputy Governor

– Abia Deputy Governor, Acho Nwakanma
The new Deputy Governor of Abia state, Chief Acho Nwakanma, is walking a familiar road. He had been Abia deputy governor in the days of former Governor Orji Kalu, coincidentally, under the same circumstances which has thrown him up on a second missionary journey in Government House, Umuahia. He was Kalu’s third deputy, and the only one who survived his unpredictable hurricane. Before him, Dr. Enyinnaya Abaribe and Chima Nwafor had been impeached.
Nwakanma is a former House of Representatives member. A native of Obingwa, a local government area which has been producing deputy governors in the state since 1999, Nwakanma is comfortable working with Orji.
Speaking to The Source on why he accepted to take a second shot at the position, he said it was a call to service. “We have to completely liberate our state, and I see no better companion to do that with than Governor Theodore Orji” he said. Continuing, Nwakanam said: “Governor Orji is my friend, and he is a good man.”
Asked if he was not afraid of the banana peels that have always thrown out deputy governors in the state, he replied: “I know the job of a deputy governor. I know my job. I survived it when nobody thought I would. This time, I am working with my friend, a friend that I know has the interest of the state at heart. A friend with whom, together, we’ll uplift the lives of our people. A friend without guile. And an honest man.”
He saw nothing wrong in his LGA continuously producing deputy governors, saying it is only a political arrangement.
